Corporate History
BioEchoes, formerly Bidez & Associates, Inc., began in 1990 as a high-technology spin-out company from the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), founded by biomedical engineering professor Martha Warren Bidez, Ph.D. The company was organized as a biomedical engineering professional service firm serving the needs of the medical, dental, and legal professions from three operating divisions: Creative Services, Legal Services, and Business Development.
The flagship product of the Creative Services division was sophisticated, three-dimensional animations for use in medical/dental education and demonstrative courtroom exhibits.
Within the Legal Services division, which is still operational, BioEchoes' experts consult on criminal and civil legal proceedings on the national level. We conduct mishap analysis of catastrophic injury incidents, particularly those involving corporate worksites and motor vehicle crashes, to determine injury causation and the role, if any, a system failure played in causing the injury. From time to time, courtroom testimony continues to be provided on behalf of both plaintiffs and defendants. The company’s extensive experience investigating catastrophic injuries ultimately led BioEchoes to expand its consulting services to government agencies and corporations aiming to maximize system safety and injury prevention. Today, BioEchoes offers customized consultation services to executive and senior managers in corporations and the government, particularly the Department of Defense, on the implementation of best practices in system safety, including ANSI compliance with relevant standards (ANSI Z10-2005; ANSI/GEIA-STD-0010-2009).
The Business Development division of BioEchoes conceptualized, incubated, and ultimately “hatched” BioHorizons, Inc., an international medical/dental device company with 2008 revenues exceeding $175 million. In 1994, BioEchoes licensed technology developed by Dr. Bidez in her UAB laboratory and patented by the university. Dr. Bidez relinquished her tenured faculty position, entered the private sector full time, and led the effort to commercialize the technology. BioHorizons grew, attracting a number of investors to continue the development and commercialization of the company’s dental implant design. Dr. Bidez remained the CEO and Chairperson of the Board of Directors throughout BioHorizons' development process and the launch of its dental implant system into the global marketplace in 1996. In 2000, she stepped down as CEO and remained Chairperson of the Board of Directors until BioHorizons was sold in 2006 to HealthPoint Capital.
Today, BioEchoes is a government certified, woman-owned business, which is organized in three operating divisions serving an international client base:
